Divorce mediation attorney Diana Mercer and divorce mediator Katie Jane Wennechuk celebrate completing the manuscript for their (our) new book, Making Divorce Work 8 Essential Keys to Resolving Conflict and Rebuilding Your Life (Penguin/Perigee 2010). The book adapts mediator techniques so that anyone can use them to keep the peace in their divorce. We do the Snoopy dance…and then go out for sushi. It is happy hour, after all.
So the work continues for divorce mediation attorney Diana Mercer at Peace Talks. New days, new clients, new issues, new challenges.
We thought the book was done when we turned in the manuscript in the fall of 2009. We were very excited! And then, a few weeks later, the editor sent it back with 182 comments on the manuscript. That sure seemed like a lot for a book that was supposed to be done! So Katie flew to Los Angeles in December 2009 and we spent the entire week re-writing the book. And, in retrospect, the editor was 100% right. The re-written book was much stronger than the original manuscript. We love editors!
There were a few adventures along the way……we went to a puppet show at the Disney Concert Hall and met Lily Tomlin. We had some great meals and fun. But we worked really hard, too, and all that work paid off.
Then it was an entire year before the book came out! That’s what feels so odd about publishing with a large publishing house. You get all excited, you’re busy busy busy writing the book, and then you wait a year. Now, of course, you’re busy putting together your marketing plan and all of that sort of thing, but you can’t really get started with implementation until about a month before publication. A lot happens in a year. Thankfully, we didn’t change our minds about what we said in the book, and the world didn’t turn upside down, making all of our suggestions wrong!
It’s really hard to know what you really think about your finished book when you’re so in the middle of writing it and editing and re-writing and moving things around. Back in December 2009 that book could’ve been written in Mandarin for all I knew. So it was really exciting to read it a year later and work on new projects like the amplified e-book (coming soon!) and the eJournal.
So the work continues being a divorce mediation attorney at Peace Talks. New days, new clients, new issues, new challenges.
…………and maybe another book. Writing a book is a ton of work but it’s very rewarding, too. Right now I’m compiling my marketing notes and am planning to self publish a marketing book. I also discovered an old manuscript for a book I was planning to write with legendary ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren (who were my neighbors at the time). I went on a 3 week tour with them one fall for all of their campus lectures around Halloween. They were in their 70’s and full of energy and enthusiasm. So I guess I’ve caught the bug.
Katie is working on writing a novel.
